Osteopathy takes your signs, symptoms and case history alongside an examination to diagnose and treat for a range of medical and musculoskeletal conditions. Fundamentally based on the body being it's own medicine cabinet, with an ability to heal itself in the absence of restriction, it works with your individual structure to restore overall functionality.
Structure and Function define wellbeing and are dependant upon the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.
Osteopaths can help with a range of medical and musculoskeletal conditions at various stages of recovery including; back pain, changes to posture in pregnancy, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, the pain of arthritis and minor sports injuries. Osteopaths’ patients include the young, older people, manual workers, office professionals, pregnant women, children and sportspeople.
They may also provide advice on posture and exercise to aid recovery, promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.
Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, relieve muscle tension, enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms.
Dependant on the issue, Osteopaths will give you an estimate of the amount of sessions you may require and/or if your problem would benefit from occasional treatment. On average it takes 3-4 sessions to make a significant improvement.
All osteopaths in the UK are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).
Osteopaths are required to renew their registration each year and are provided with an annual licence to practise. As part of this process, the GOsC checks that osteopaths have current professional indemnity insurance, remain in good health and of good character, and have met mandatory continuing professional development requirements.
